The 1988 Archaeology Project: Searching for Early Big Trees Building Locations

Presented by Julia G. Costello, Ph.D.
The1988 archaeology project at Calaveras Big Trees focused on identifying the earliest building locations at this historic site. Although early photographs, sketches, and descriptions showed glimpses of where the Cottage, Haynes Addition, and Barn were located, the Calaveras Big Trees Association and State Parks wanted to know exactly where they had been. Julia Costello led an archaeology class from Columbia College, metal detectionists from the Central Valley worked the area, and Resource Ecologist Wayne Harrison studied the dendrochronology of the forest. The results produced some exact and some tentative structure locations and understanding of the opening in the forest created for them.
