His work intersects science\, art\, and mindfulness. Trained as a wildlife biologist and an associate of the California Academy of Sciences\, he observes the world with rigorous attention. He looks for mysteries\, plays with ideas\, and seeks connections in all he sees. Attention\, observation\, curiosity\, and creative thinking are not gifts\, but skills that grow with training and deliberate practice. As an educator and author\, Jack teaches techniques and supports routines that develop these skills to make them a part of everyday life. \nHe was given the 2020 Bay Nature Local Hero award for his work in environmental education. In 2009\, he received the Terwilliger Environmental Award for outstanding service in Environmental Education. He is a 2010 TogetherGreen Conservation Leadership Fellow with the National Audubon Society. He was the 2011 artist for International Migratory Bird Day. He has written and illustrated books about art and natural history including The Laws Guide to Nature Drawing and Journaling (2016)\, The Laws Guide to Drawing Birds (2012)\, Sierra Birds: a Hiker’s Guide (2004)\, The Laws Guide to the Sierra Nevada (2007)\, and The Laws Pocket Guide Set to the San Francisco Bay Area (2009). SUMMARY:Seminar - The Way Across the Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Presented by author Scott Stine.  A historical account of a trek across the Sierra. \nFrom July to November 1833\, Joseph R. Walker led a brigade of fifty-eight fur trappers\, with two hundred horses and a year’s provisions\, from the Rocky Mountains of Wyoming to the Pacific coast of central California. Toward the end of their journey the Walker brigade crossed the Sierra Nevada\, becoming the first non-Native people to traverse the range from east to west. That crossing\, made long and brutal by bewildering terrain and deep snow\, is widely and rightly considered a milestone in the exploration of intermontane North America. \nFollowing Walker’s death in 1876\, an alluring tale arose concerning his trans-Sierran route. In the course of the crossing\, goes the story\, Walker found himself on the northern rim of Yosemite Valley at the plungepoint of North America’s tallest waterfall\, staring into the most awesome mountain chasm on the continent. Over the decades since then\, this time-honored tale has hardened to folklore. Dozens of historical works have construed it as a towering moment in the opening of the West. \nBut in fact this tale of Yosemite’s discovery has no basis or support in firsthand accounts of the 1833 Sierran crossing. Moreover\, there is much in those accounts that contradicts Yosemite lore\, and much that points to a trans-Sierran route well north of Yosemite Valley. \nIn A Way Across the Mountain\, Scott Stine reconstructs Walker’s 1833 route over the Sierra. Stine draws on his own intimate knowledge of the geomorphology\, hydrography\, biogeography\, and climate of the Sierra Nevada and Great Basin\, and employs the detailed travel narrative of the Walker brigade’s field clerk\, Zenas Leonard. Stine documents the inception\, growth\, and persistence of the Yosemite Myth and explores the extent to which that lore has overshadowed Walker’s greatest discovery—that the huge swath of continent between the Wasatch Front and the Sierran crest is hydrographically closed\, draining not to an ocean\, but to salty lakes and desert sands. \nScott Stine is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Anthropology\, Geography\, and Environmental Studies at California State University\, East Bay. He resides in Point Reyes Station\, California.

DESCRIPTION:Presented by Alan and Claudia Beymer\, our amazing Park photographers. \nHow do you take a picture of a Giant Sequoia?  Come find out. \nTwo of the most prolific photographers in Calaveras Big Trees State Park will provide a free slide show this Saturday May 5 of their beautiful work\, including dozens of stunning photographs of giant sequoias  and the surrounding forest\, plus wildlife seen frequently in the park. The event\, one in a series of free seminars for the public\, begins at 10 a.m. in the education building’s classroom at the Visitor Center\, and ends at noon.\n\nThe event is intended to share great photos\, plus offer ideas for people who use anything from a smart phone to an expensive set of cameras.\nAt the end of the slide show and  talk by Claudia and Alan Beymer\, who have concentrated on photographing Big Trees and its residents for the last decade\, participants can join them on a brief excursion outside into the park for pointers on photographing the big trees.\nThe talk will include tips on the best time of day for photography\, taking advantage of seasons and weather\, and what is required to capture  tiny wild creatures.\n\nThis summer the park staff will offer workshops on improving nature photography.\nSeminars are free and open to the public. His family emigrated to the U.S. just ten years later and by 1851 John was a young man\, ready to try his luck in the gold fields of California. While he undoubtedly brought enthusiasm and determination with him to his new home\, he also brought with him something the people of that region had never seen before: skis! Unfamiliar with the long thin strips of wood he strapped to his feet\, people called them “snow-shoes” and Thompson acquired a nickname. \nOf the many interests he pursued in the years that followed-as a farmer\, rancher\, guide\, trader\, Indian agent and politician-the thing Thompson is remembered most for was his service as a dependable mail carrier\, who made record time traversing the Sierra Nevada on those “snow-shoes\,” carrying the winter mail and keeping the lines of communication open for those who lived in the region.
