The California Naturalist Handbook provides a fun, science-based introduction to California’s natural history with an emphasis on observation, discovery, communication, stewardship and conservation. It is a hands-on guide to learning about the natural environment of California. Subjects covered include California natural history and geology, native plants and animals, California’s freshwater resources and ecosystems, forest and rangeland resources, conservation biology, and the effects of global warming on California’s natural communities. The Handbook also discusses how to create and use a field notebook, natural resource interpretation, citizen science, and collaborative conservation and serves as the primary text for the California Naturalist Program.

John A. Thompson was born Norway in 1827. His family emigrated to the U.S. just ten years later and by 1851 John was a young man, ready to try his luck in the gold fields of California. While he undoubtedly brought enthusiasm and determination with him to his new home, he also brought with him something the people of that region had never seen before: skis! Unfamiliar with the long thin strips of wood he strapped to his feet, people called them "snow-shoes" and Thompson acquired a nickname. Calaveras Big Trees, a new title in Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America series, tells the colorful history of one of the state’s oldest and longest-running tourist attractions, the famous grove of big trees, in a 128-page paperback featuring 200 historical photographs. Most of the images come from the state park’s archives, with contributions from the Calaveras County Archives, the Old Timer’s Museum in Murphys and the Calaveras County Historical Society, among others.
