Friends of Calaveras Big Trees,

I am writing this to you from my desk at home, and due to the COVID-19 virus it is likely you are reading from your home too.

Here is an update on the current status of Calaveras Big Trees Association.

First, we are doing our part to flatten the curve of spread of the disease in these trying times. We stay close in touch with our partners in Department of Parks and Recreation, and following their rules and advice. We have suspended all public programs planned through May including the annual Dogwood Festival fundraiser and an Advisory Council meeting. Seminars that have to be postponed will hopefully be rescheduled later this year. The California Naturalists Training Program which we co-sponsor has been postponed until Spring 2021.

Second, I am happy to report that due to the foresight of CBTA boards of the past the organization has sufficient reserve funds to maintain, for now, key staff members who are vital  to keeping CBTA ready to resume normal activities. They are working safely in isolation on planning, inventory and purchasing, monitoring our financial status and staying connected to you and the public by phone and Internet.

Finally, we are using this down time to do better planning for the future in partnership with California State Parks, maintain contact with those of you who have faithfully supported CBTA in the past,   keep the public aware of the park we love and support and protect our ability to resume normal operations when the time comes.

Thank you for your continuing interest and support of Big Trees.

Sanders LaMont,

President,  Calaveras Big Trees Assocation
