SUMMARY:Tree Mortality\, Fire\, Climate Change and Future Forests in the Sierra Nevada- Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Susie Kocher\, Forestry/ Natural Resources Advisor \nThe forests of the Sierra Nevada have been undergoing increasing stressors with drought leading to increasing tree mortality and wildfires killing trees across vast areas. The type and timing of disturbances such as bark beetles or fire have profound effects on the recovery of Sierra Nevada forests as does the warming climate. This talk will review the current state of Sierra forests\, prospects for the future and need action to keep those forests healthy for coming generations. \n  \nSeminars are free and open to the public. There is a day-use fee to enter the Park. Pack a lunch\, bring the family and plan on spending the day among the Giant Sequoias. For more information call Calaveras Big Trees Association at (209)795-1196. \nLocation:  Ralston Classroom – Education Building near Visitor Center.

SUMMARY:Glorious Trees-Alfred Russel Wallace in California - Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Presented by author\, Sal Manna \nThis book is the until-now untold story of the 1887 visit to California of one of the most famous men of science in the world\, the man who had conceptualized around the same time as Darwin the “survival of the fittest” cornerstone of natural selection\, the lynch-pin for the theory of evolution. The book chronicles Wallace during his stay\, from his visits to the natural wonders of Yosemite and the Calaveras Big Trees to his meetings with the state’s most eminent scientists and pivotal figures such as conservationist John Muir and politician and businessman Leland Stanford. What Wallace did and said in California connected him to a bewildering and sometimes bemusing range of people and subjects\, from environmentalism to the beginnings of Stanford University; from the Calaveras Skull and one of the greatest hoaxes in natural history to Spiritualism and its colorful frauds. His American journey was the first and only speaking tour in his lifetime. \nNowhere in America did Wallace immerse himself in nature as completely and nowhere were there cathedrals of nature he wanted most to worship at than those in California. Nowhere was his personal connection stronger than in California as well and the story of his ’49er brother John is integral to understanding Alfred’s time in California (the town of Wallace in Calaveras County is named for John!). The branches of “Glorious Trees: Alfred Russel Wallace in California” extend as far and as wide as those of the Sequoias Wallace so admired.  “Glorious Trees” contributes an until-now unexamined portion of his life to the biography of one of the most fascinating men in the history of science. \n  \nSeminars are free and open to the public. There is a day-use fee to enter the Park. Pack a lunch\, bring the family and plan on spending the day among the Giant Sequoias. SUMMARY:Searching for Gold Spot --The Wild After Wildfire - Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Forests that have experienced fire are vibrant\, dazzling\, and full of life. While searching for the rare Black-backed Woodpeckers\, which rely on these burned forests\, biologists encounter a plethora of other wildlife such as deer\, black bears\, bobcats\, sapsuckers\, bluebirds\, wrens\, and raptors\, including nesting Northern Goshawks and Spotted Owls and their chicks. The Black-backed Woodpeckers have recently been petitioned for special status species listing (threatened or endangered). Come enjoy this film’s short journey of wonder and discovery. \nSearching for Gold Spot – The Wild After Wildfire” is a film bringing to light the importance of fire to montane (mountain) forests and wildlife of the American West. The film chronicles the current research and conservation efforts of a team of biologists focusing on rare Black-backed Woodpeckers native to the Sierra Nevada-Cascades Region. While searching for these incredibly camouflaged cavity nesters\, the team also finds a plethora of other wildlife in a vibrant and rapidly regenerating but threatened ecosystem – the post-fire\, or “snag”\, forest.  Blending a visually exquisite celebration of wilderness with awareness of the challenges involved with saving it\, “Searching for Gold Spot” will raise important questions about conservation of the wild as we know it.  Check out the trailer at https://youtu.be/ohWIrCb2liE. 30 min \n  \n\nSeminars are free and open to the public. There is a day-use fee to enter the Park. Pack a lunch\, bring the family and plan on spending the day among the Giant Sequoias. SUMMARY:"Snowshoe" Thompson - Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Pioneer Mail Carrier of the Sierra \nJoin Frank Tortorich to learn more about John A. “Snowshoe” Thompson. \nJohn A. Thompson was born Norway in 1827. His family emigrated to the U.S. just ten years later and by 1851 John was a young man\, ready to try his luck in the gold fields of California. While he undoubtedly brought enthusiasm and determination with him to his new home\, he also brought with him something the people of that region had never seen before: skis! Unfamiliar with the long thin strips of wood he strapped to his feet\, people called them “snow-shoes” and Thompson acquired a nickname. \nOf the many interests he pursued in the years that followed-as a farmer\, rancher\, guide\, trader\, Indian agent and politician-the thing Thompson is remembered most for was his service as a dependable mail carrier\, who made record time traversing the Sierra Nevada on those “snow-shoes\,” carrying the winter mail and keeping the lines of communication open for those who lived in the region. This is his story. \nFrank Tortorich captures the fortitude and stamina of this legendary Norwegian American whose strength and perseverance serve as a role model for today’s youth.”Snowshoe” and the historic town of Genoa are grateful!-Sue Knight\, Friends of Snowshoe Thompson \nThe author’s knowledge and understanding of the Sierra emigration era serves as a background for what he has been able to express in this book. Tusen takk!-Nina MacLeod \nCaveat Lector (let the reader beware). Frank Tortorich’s gripping account of the legendary life\, legacy\, and accomplishments of John “Snowshoe” Thompson is most captivating\, and his excitement\, enthusiasm\, and interest in California pioneers and Gold Rush history are contagious. Ken Johnston\, author of Legendary Truths\, Peter Lassen and His Gold Rush Trail in Fact and Fable. \nClick Here to purchase book.   \nSeminars are free and open to the public.
