SUMMARY:Astronomy Program
DESCRIPTION:Come look at the stars! Docents will be sharing information and telling stories as everyone gazes at the night sky. Two telescopes and astronomical binoculars will give you a closer look at the moon\, planets and deep sky objects. \nWe’re excited to have a webcam for one of the telescopes\, so images can be shown on a 40” monitor in real time. No more standing in line to look through the big telescope! \nMeet us at the Scenic Overlook in the park\, just a few miles past the Visitor Center. This is one of the best night sky viewing areas in the region. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on. \nThe Astronomy program at the park is run entirely by docent volunteers with significant investment by the Calaveras Big Trees Association. \nPlease join us! \nPlease call 209-795-7980 with any questions.

SUMMARY:Discovery Day - History Comes Alive
DESCRIPTION:On July 20th\, 2019\, Calaveras Big Trees State Park will offer a special event called Discovery Day.  It’s a celebration of the “Discovery” of the Giant Sequoia Trees. Park docents will share the stories of how our park came to be. Visitors may pick up a “Passport” and visit the 5 locations near the Visitor Center to hear the brief presentations. When visitors present their stamped passport\, they will be gifted a souvenir. \n The park will be opened as usual for Discovery Day and regular activities will take place. \n A replica of a gold miner’s camp will be near the campfire area for you to see. \n In addition\, Salvatore Manna\, a local author\, will be in the education building with his presentation of Alfred Russel Wallace’s visit to the Big Trees.  Wallace and Charles Darwin coincidentally conceived the idea of evolution at the same time.  In 1889\, Alfred Wallace traveled to our area to admire our Giant Sequoias.  He also visited his brother who came  during the gold rush and settled in an area now known as Wallace. \n The Passport activities will take place between 11 am and 2 pm. Mr. Manna’s presentations will be at 11:30\, 12:30 and 1:30.  \nA food truck will be at the park near Jack Knight Hall as well as cold beverages and ice cream will be sold in the warming hut\, and a good time will be had by all. \n Did you read that right? A FOOD TRUCK WILL BE AT THE PARK for discovery day!

SUMMARY:Seminar - The Way Across the Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Presented by author Scott Stine.  A historical account of a trek across the Sierra. \nFrom July to November 1833\, Joseph R. Walker led a brigade of fifty-eight fur trappers\, with two hundred horses and a year’s provisions\, from the Rocky Mountains of Wyoming to the Pacific coast of central California. Toward the end of their journey the Walker brigade crossed the Sierra Nevada\, becoming the first non-Native people to traverse the range from east to west. That crossing\, made long and brutal by bewildering terrain and deep snow\, is widely and rightly considered a milestone in the exploration of intermontane North America. \nFollowing Walker’s death in 1876\, an alluring tale arose concerning his trans-Sierran route. In the course of the crossing\, goes the story\, Walker found himself on the northern rim of Yosemite Valley at the plungepoint of North America’s tallest waterfall\, staring into the most awesome mountain chasm on the continent. Over the decades since then\, this time-honored tale has hardened to folklore. Dozens of historical works have construed it as a towering moment in the opening of the West. \nBut in fact this tale of Yosemite’s discovery has no basis or support in firsthand accounts of the 1833 Sierran crossing. Moreover\, there is much in those accounts that contradicts Yosemite lore\, and much that points to a trans-Sierran route well north of Yosemite Valley. \nIn A Way Across the Mountain\, Scott Stine reconstructs Walker’s 1833 route over the Sierra. Stine draws on his own intimate knowledge of the geomorphology\, hydrography\, biogeography\, and climate of the Sierra Nevada and Great Basin\, and employs the detailed travel narrative of the Walker brigade’s field clerk\, Zenas Leonard. Stine documents the inception\, growth\, and persistence of the Yosemite Myth and explores the extent to which that lore has overshadowed Walker’s greatest discovery—that the huge swath of continent between the Wasatch Front and the Sierran crest is hydrographically closed\, draining not to an ocean\, but to salty lakes and desert sands. \nScott Stine is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Anthropology\, Geography\, and Environmental Studies at California State University\, East Bay. He resides in Point Reyes Station\, California.

SUMMARY:Warming Hut
DESCRIPTION:The Warming Hut is a great place to warm up by a roaring fire on a cold day\, and enjoy a complimentary hot beverage (tea\, coffee\, cider\, or cocoa) served by friendly Docents. Donations are always welcome. \nThe Warming Hut is also the place to borrow snowshoes for a North Grove Guided Hike\, if there is sufficient snow on the ground. (Our snowshoes are available only for guided tours; we do not rent them.) \nThe Warming Hut is normally open Saturdays & Sundays\, with some additional days around holidays.
