A perfect experience for teachers\, home school parents\, and anyone interested in taking their birding and nature study to the next level. \nJohn (Jack) Muir Laws is a principal leader and innovator of the worldwide nature journaling movement. Jack is a scientist\, educator\, and author\, who helps people forge a deeper and more personal connection with nature through keeping illustrated nature journals and understanding science. His work intersects science\, art\, and mindfulness. Trained as a wildlife biologist and an associate of the California Academy of Sciences\, he observes the world with rigorous attention. He looks for mysteries\, plays with ideas\, and seeks connections in all he sees. Attention\, observation\, curiosity\, and creative thinking are not gifts\, but skills that grow with training and deliberate practice. As an educator and author\, Jack teaches techniques and supports routines that develop these skills to make them a part of everyday life. \nHe was given the 2020 Bay Nature Local Hero award for his work in environmental education. In 2009\, he received the Terwilliger Environmental Award for outstanding service in Environmental Education. He is a 2010 TogetherGreen Conservation Leadership Fellow with the National Audubon Society. He was the 2011 artist for International Migratory Bird Day. He has written and illustrated books about art and natural history including The Laws Guide to Nature Drawing and Journaling (2016)\, The Laws Guide to Drawing Birds (2012)\, Sierra Birds: a Hiker’s Guide (2004)\, The Laws Guide to the Sierra Nevada (2007)\, and The Laws Pocket Guide Set to the San Francisco Bay Area (2009). He is a regular contributor to Bay Nature magazine with his “Naturalists Notebook” column. He is the primary author and editor of the curriculum: Opening the World through Nature Journaling. This free teaching guide is kid-tested and teacher-approved and integrates science\, language arts\, and visual arts through keeping a nature journal. This presentation will describe how changing environmental conditions present novel challenges to the health and survival of giant sequoias and highlight ongoing efforts to study and protect these forests in an era of rapid global change. \n  \n \nAnthony Ambrose\n“I’m a forest ecologist focused on studying and protecting ancient trees and forests around the world. I’m interested in understanding how  trees grow and interact with their environment\, how forests respond to environmental change\, and how science and public outreach can be used to help conserve forest ecosystems on a rapidly changing planet.” \n \nWendy Baxter\nThe beauty of natural landscapes has captivated me all my life. I have been fortunate enough to work in some of the most pristine old-growth giant sequoia and coast redwood forests in California as a researcher at UC Berkeley in Professor Todd Dawson’s lab\, collaborating closely with forest ecologist\, Anthony Ambrose. \n  \nAll seminars are free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:June 24\, 2021 commemorates the 90 years of wonder that Calaveras Big Trees State Park has provided. \nCalaveras Big Trees became a California State Park in 1931 to preserve the North Grove of giant sequoias.  Please join us as we celebrate this day. \nActivities will be continuous from 10 am – 3 pm Thursday June 24\, 2021.  They will include a fun scavenger hunt around the park\, Jr. Rangers and Cubs\, plus more surprises including treats and prizes while they last. \nCheck back for more information\, but put the date on your calendar. \n \n

DESCRIPTION:In an abundance of caution\, 2020 Discovery Day unfortunately has been cancelled. \nOn July 25th\, 2020\, Calaveras Big Trees State Park will offer a special event called Discovery Day. It’s a celebration of the “Discovery” of the Giant Sequoia Trees. Park docents will share the stories of how our park came to be. Visitors may pick up a “Passport” and visit the 5 locations near the Visitor Center to hear the brief presentations. When visitors present their stamped passport\, they will be gifted a souvenir. \nThe park will be opened as usual for Discovery Day and regular activities will take place.\nA replica of a gold miner’s camp will be near the campfire area for you to see. \nThe Passport activities will take place between 11 am and 2 pm.\nMore details as they become available.

DESCRIPTION:Sorry Another Casulty of CoVid-19.\nThe 2020 Dogwood Festival Celebrates:  Folk-Rock\nThis year\, featuring Blind Dog: \nBlind Dog\, a 5-piece acoustic guitar band from Livermore\, plays contemporary folk music\, Celtic folk/rock\, blues\, and country.  Three women and two men cover songs by a variety of artists\, including Kate Wolf\, Lucinda Williams\, James Taylor\, Howlin’ Wolf\, Mary Black\, Neil Young\, the Beatles\, Ryan Adams\, Carter Family\, John Prine\, Fleetwood Mac\, and others–plus a few original tunes.  Blind Dog features 3- and 4-part vocal harmonies with instrumentation by Carrie Seng (fiddle and mandolin)\, Frankie Tate (bass and harmonica)\, Rosie Turner (percussion)\, Stu Frazier (guitar)\, and Tim Peck (guitar and dobro).  Blind Dog has played at coffee houses\, wineries\, festivals\, and folk concerts in the Bay Area for the past 25 years. All of the band members love spending time at Calaveras Big Trees and two members\, Frankie and Tim\, are docents at the Park. \nCelebrate the season of the Dogwood\nSaturday May 9\, 2020 \nMusic – 2 pm – 4:30 pm\nDogwood Walk 12:30 – 1:30 \nCelebrate the amazing season of the Dogwood and join us in Jack Knight Hall in Calaveras Big Trees State Park for amazing music\, hors d’oeuvres\, winetasting from Indian Rock Vineyards and more surprises to come including the chance to purchase love Quyle Kiln pottery\, face painting\, a raffle and more. \nIn addition\, there will be a private “Walk Among the Dogwoods” before the concert for ticket holders only. \nThis event is a fundraiser for Calaveras Big Trees Association. All proceeds will be used to help fulfill our mission to support the delivery of high quality educational and interpretive programs for Calaveras Big Trees State Park. \n
