SUMMARY:Searching for Gold Spot --The Wild After Wildfire - Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Forests that have experienced fire are vibrant\, dazzling\, and full of life. While searching for the rare Black-backed Woodpeckers\, which rely on these burned forests\, biologists encounter a plethora of other wildlife such as deer\, black bears\, bobcats\, sapsuckers\, bluebirds\, wrens\, and raptors\, including nesting Northern Goshawks and Spotted Owls and their chicks. The Black-backed Woodpeckers have recently been petitioned for special status species listing (threatened or endangered). Come enjoy this film’s short journey of wonder and discovery. \nSearching for Gold Spot – The Wild After Wildfire” is a film bringing to light the importance of fire to montane (mountain) forests and wildlife of the American West. The film chronicles the current research and conservation efforts of a team of biologists focusing on rare Black-backed Woodpeckers native to the Sierra Nevada-Cascades Region. While searching for these incredibly camouflaged cavity nesters\, the team also finds a plethora of other wildlife in a vibrant and rapidly regenerating but threatened ecosystem – the post-fire\, or “snag”\, forest.  Blending a visually exquisite celebration of wilderness with awareness of the challenges involved with saving it\, “Searching for Gold Spot” will raise important questions about conservation of the wild as we know it.  Check out the trailer at https://youtu.be/ohWIrCb2liE. 30 min \n  \n\nSeminars are free and open to the public. There is a day-use fee to enter the Park. Pack a lunch\, bring the family and plan on spending the day among the Giant Sequoias. For more information call Calaveras Big Trees Association at (209)795-1196. \nLocation:  Ralston Classroom – Education Building near Visitor Center.

SUMMARY:Drought and Bark Beetle-Caused Tree Mortality in the Sierra- Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Christopher Fettig\, Research Entomologist and Team Leader for the Forest Service\, will speak on: Drought and Bark Beetle-caused Tree Mortality in the Sierra: Causes\, Consequences and the Future”. \nAs a result of extensive levels of tree mortality in the central and southern Sierra Nevada due to bark beetle outbreaks\, Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency on 30 October 2015\, establishing a task force to help address the issue. Sixty-two million trees died in 2016\, bringing the total to at least 102 million trees in the last 10 years.  Dr. Fettig will discuss the causes and consequences of the current outbreak\, the role of drought in inciting bark beetle outbreaks\, and what might be expected in 2017 given near record precipitation this winter. \nSeminars are free and open to the public.

Come explore the notion of plants and trees and learn about select members from these communities. \nProgram Leader: Nancy E. Muleady-Mecham\, Ph.D. \nDoc Nancy is an Adjunct Professor of Biology at Northern Arizona University\, a Visiting Lecturer for the University of Virginia Semester At Sea program\, and a Fulbright Scholar who taught biology and astronomy and conducted research in Siberia in the Russian Federation.  Nancy is a retired National Park Ranger\, which included working 14 seasons in Sequoia National Park.  She is the author of several books and recently assisted in the update of “Enduring Giants: The Epic Story of Giant Sequoia and the Big Trees of Calaveras.”  She is an avid backpacker having solo hiked the John Muir Trail\, The Haute Route in the Alps\, and has led many Sierran seminars from backpacking to bears to geology. \nThe seminars are free and open to the public.
