DESCRIPTION:The Warming Hut is a great place to warm up by a roaring fire on a cold day\, and enjoy a complimentary hot beverage (tea\, coffee\, cider\, or cocoa) served by friendly Docents. Donations are always welcome. \nThe Warming Hut is also the place to borrow snowshoes for a North Grove Guided Hike\, if there is sufficient snow on the ground. (Our snowshoes are available only for guided tours; we do not rent them.) \nThe Warming Hut is normally open Saturdays & Sundays\, with some additional days around holidays. \n

SUMMARY:First Day Hike
DESCRIPTION:What better way to kick off the New Year than by getting a jump start burning off those extra holiday calories in the great outdoors? \nThe Calaveras Big Trees hike will explore the contributions the Civilian Conservation Corp made to the park and their continued influence in the park. \nHikers will meet in front of Jack Knight Hall beginning at 11AM on January 1.  The hike will be just under one mile and the program will last approximately 45 minutes.  The hike is ADA friendly but will involve uneven terrain\, loose soil\, a few slight hills and possibly snow.  Hikers are advised to dress in layers\, wear warm shoes/boots that are water resistant and bring water.  This hike is geared towards older school students and adults interested in 20th century history.  Service dogs are permitted; pets are prohibited since we will be entering a park building as part of the hike.  The hike will be cancelled if it’s raining. \nCall 209-795-7980 or 209-795-3840 with any questions.

DESCRIPTION:Come look at the stars! Docents will be sharing information and telling stories as everyone gazes at the night sky. Two telescopes and astronomical binoculars will give you a closer look at the moon\, planets and deep sky objects. \nWe’re excited to have a webcam for one of the telescopes\, so images can be shown on a 40” monitor in real time. No more standing in line to look through the big telescope! \nMeet us at the Scenic Overlook in the park\, just a few miles past the Visitor Center. This is one of the best night sky viewing areas in the region. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on. \nThe Astronomy program at the park is run entirely by docent volunteers with significant investment by the Calaveras Big Trees Association. \nPlease join us! \nPlease call 209-795-7980 with any questions.

DESCRIPTION:Presented by Nancy Muleady-Mecham \nAnswers to your “why” questions. \nDoc Nancy is an Adjunct Professor of Biology at Northern Arizona University\, a Visiting Lecturer for the University of Virginia Semester At Sea program\, and a Fulbright Scholar who taught biology and astronomy and conducted research in Siberia in the Russian Federation.  Nancy is a retired National Park Ranger\, which included working 14 seasons in Sequoia National Park.  She is the author of several books and recently assisted in the update of “Enduring Giants: The Epic Story of Giant Sequoia and the Big Trees of Calaveras.”  She is an avid backpacker having solo hiked the John Muir Trail\, The Haute Route in the Alps\, and has led many Sierra seminars from backpacking to bears to geology. \n

DESCRIPTION:Come look at the stars! Docents will be sharing information and telling stories as everyone gazes at the night sky. Two telescopes and astronomical binoculars will give you a closer look at the moon\, planets and deep sky objects. \nWe’re excited to have a webcam for one of the telescopes\, so images can be shown on a 40” monitor in real time. No more standing in line to look through the big telescope! \nMeet us at the Scenic Overlook in the park\, just a few miles past the Visitor Center. This is one of the best night sky viewing areas in the region. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on. \nThe Astronomy program at the park is run entirely by docent volunteers with significant investment by the Calaveras Big Trees Association. \nPlease join us! \nPlease call 209-795-7980 with any questions.
