SUMMARY:Update: Prescribed Burn Planned
DESCRIPTION:California State Parks\, in cooperation with CAL FIRE\, plans to conduct prescribed burning at Calaveras Big Trees State Park (SP) in June. Work may begin as soon as June 4\, and burning will take 3 to 5 days. If weather\, air quality\, or vegetation conditions are not conducive for burning or smoke dispersal\, State Parks will reschedule the treatment.\n\n\n\nThe planned fire treatment will cover up to 157 acres and will include areas along the Walter W. Smith Parkway and the park’s eastern boundary near the lower edge of Big Trees Village. Visitors should expect possible closures during the prescribed burn and one lane of traffic control on the Walter W. Smith Parkway.\n\n\n\nAlthough prescribed burns produce significantly less smoke than wildfires\, campers and communities near Calaveras Big Trees SP including Arnold\, Dorrington\, Big Trees Village\, White Pines\, Blue Lake Springs\, and Love Creek may experience smoke from the burning operations. The department plans and coordinates these burns with the Calaveras and Tuolumne County Air Districts to minimize the smoke in surrounding communities.\n\n\n\nPrescribed burning is one of the tools used by the department for vegetation management to increase the resilience of the forest. Forest management and prescribed fires help restore and maintain a complex forest community\, reduce hazardous fuel loads\, improve wildlife habitat\, restore nutrients to the soil\, protect park infrastructure\, and reduce the chance of a catastrophic wildfire.\n\n\n\nThe planned prescribed burn at Calaveras Big Trees SP is funded by the State of California through the Wildfire and Forest Resiliency Program (WFRP). WFRP expands on critical land management that California State Parks has been carrying out for decades and supports increasing the pace and scale of fuels treatments so that California’s State Park System can become an example of resilient ecosystems maintained through active stewardship.\n\n\n\n ATTENTION CAMPERS\nThe Oak Hollow Campground may be heavily impacted by smoke\, especially overnight. The North Grove Campground may experience some smoke.\n\n\n#BigTrees #CAStateParks #PrecribedFire

SUMMARY:Prescribed Burn Continues October 20\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:PRESCRIBED FIRE BURN HAS BEGUN AS OF THURSDAY OCTOBER 19\, 2023\n\nClosures: North Grove Trail\, Grove Overlook Trail\, and Three Senses Trail\n\n\n\n\nThe majority of the North Grove area will be closed through the weekend and until conditions favor reopening.\nThis includes the iconic North Grove Trail\, Grove Overlook Trail\, Three Senses Trail\, and a portion of the River Canyon Trail.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmber Sprock  \nPublic Information Office/ Marketing Director\namber.sprock.@parks.ca.gov\n(209) 540-6857\n___________________________________________________________________ \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe planned treatment will cover approximately 39 acres in the heart of the North Grove area of the state park. Visitors should expect significant closures during the prescribed burning\, including North Grove Trail\, Three Senses Trail\, and Grove Overlook Trail. Closures will remain in effect until conditions favor reopening. Smoke will remain in the area for some time after active firing has stopped. California State Parks has prepared the unit for treatment.\n\n\n\nThe protection and stewardship of the giant sequoia groves has been a department priority since the park’s creation in 1931. Prescribed burning is part of State Park’s program for vegetation management to increase the resilience of the forest and promote new giant sequoia growth. Forest management and prescribed fire help restore and maintain a complex forest community\, reduce hazardous fuel loads\, improve wildlife habitat\, restore nutrients to the soil\, protect park infrastructure\, and reduce the chance of a catastrophic wildfire.\n\n\n\nThis project is funded by the State of California through the Wildfire and Forest Resiliency Program (WFRP). WFRP expands on critical land management that California State Parks has been carrying out for decades and supports increasing the pace and scale of fuels treatments so that California’s State Park System can become an example of resilient ecosystems maintained through active stewardship.\n\n\n\nLearn more about prescribed fire at www.parks.ca.gov/bigtreesprescribedfire\n\n\n#bigtrees #castateparks #prescribedfire

SUMMARY:Creek Critters is Back!!
DESCRIPTION:There be critters in that there creek! \n.\nJoin us at the Beaver Creek Picnic Area\, every Saturday from 1-2pm\, to search for critters in Beaver Creek! While you’re there\, you’ll discover all kinds of interesting creatures and learn about the role they play in creating a healthy ecosystem. Make sure you bring your water shoes and be prepared to get wet!\n.\nYou may remember that\, last year\, we had Creek Critter programs on Saturdays AND Tuesdays. For now\, Tuesday programs are TBD\, but watch this space for updates.\n.\nThe Beaver Creek Picnic Area is located about 9 miles down the Walter W. Smith Memorial Parkway\, so it might take you an extra 30 minutes to get there once you’ve entered the park – plan accordingly!\n.\nAlso keep in mind\, there may be one-way traffic control in some areas along the Parkway this weekend as our fire crews monitor and mop up the recent prescribed burn. If that is the case\, your arrival to Beaver Creek may be even further delayed by up to ten minutes.
