SUMMARY:Finding the Mammoth Grove Hotel
DESCRIPTION:Finding the Mammoth Grove Hotel\nA History Talk at Calaveras Big Trees \n\n\n\nJoin Us for “Finding the Mammoth Grove Hotel” \nThe Calaveras Big Trees Association is delighted to invite you to Finding the Mammoth Grove Hotel\, a special presentation uncovering the story of the grand resort that once welcomed travelers from around the world beneath our ancient giants. \nFor decades\, the Mammoth Grove Hotel stood as the heart of the North Grove\, a gathering place for early tourists\, dignitaries\, and dreamers drawn to the big trees\, until fire took it in 1943. Presenters Joan Allday and Sally Finch will share their story through archival photographs\, old records\, and the memories of those who came before us. In this presentation\, they’ll share what they’ve found and what still remains a mystery. \nFor those of us who call the Sierra Nevada home\, the hotel’s story feels like a missing piece of our own. \nDon’t miss this rare opportunity to hear Joan and Sally speak\, ask questions\, and connect with others who share a love for this place and its history. \n\n\nEvent Details\nDate: Saturday\, August 15\, 2026\nTime: 10:00 a.m.\nLocation: Education Center\, Calaveras Big Trees State Park \n\n\nAbout the Presenters\nSally Finch is a CBTA Board Member with a deep commitment to preserving and sharing the history of Calaveras Big Trees State Park. \nJoan Allday is a long-time docent and former CBTA board member whose years of oral history interviews with park visitors and community members helped launch CBTA’s History Project\, preserving the stories that shape our understanding of this special place.

SUMMARY:The Birds of Calaveras Big Trees
DESCRIPTION:Presentation with Alan Beymer\nA Special Morning at Calaveras Big Trees \n\n\n\nJoin Us for a Presentation with Alan Beymer \nThe Calaveras Big Trees Association is pleased to welcome Alan Beymer for a morning dedicated to the birds that live in our park. \nThe giant sequoias get much of our attention. But look up\, and listen\, the birds of Calaveras Big Trees have a compelling story to tell. In his presentation\, The Birds of Calaveras Big Trees\, Beymer draws on a lifetime of careful observation to bring these species into focus\, offering a closer look at who’s here\, when they arrive\, and what their presence tells us about the health and rhythm of this forest. \n\n\n\nFrom the striking black-and-white flash of the White-headed Woodpecker prying the bark of a sugar pine\, to the flame of a Western Tanager in the summer canopy\, to the quiet industry of the Brown Creeper spiraling up an ancient trunk\, these birds are everywhere\, if you know where to look. \nFor all of us\, his talk is an invitation to listen a little more closely the next time we step outside. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to hear Alan speak\, ask questions\, and connect with others who share a love for the wild world around us. \n\n\nAbout the Presenter\nAlan Beymer is a retired educator from Merced College and a longtime resident of Arnold\, California. His years living and observing in the foothills and mountains of the central Sierra have given him an intimate familiarity with the birds and natural world of this region.

SUMMARY:M. Kat Anderson - Author Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Author Talk with M. Kat Anderson\nA Special Morning at Calaveras Big Trees \nJoin Us for an Author Talk with M. Kat Anderson \nThe Calaveras Big Trees Association is delighted to welcome ethnobotanist and author M. Kat Anderson for a morning of inspiration and discovery. \nWhat does it mean to truly belong to a landscape\, to listen to it\, and let it sing back? In her new book\, I Sing to the Earth and She Sings Back\, ethnobotanist M. Kat Anderson invites us into a more intimate\, embodied relationship with the natural world\, one grounded in presence\, reciprocity\, and a reawakening of ancestral ways of knowing. \nBuilding on the foundation of her landmark book Tending the Wild\, which transformed how we understand Indigenous stewardship of California’s landscapes\, Anderson draws from decades of collaboration with Native elders and a lifetime of personal experience as an ecologist and seeker. She weaves storytelling\, cultural insight\, and practical guidance into ten lyrical chapters that speak powerfully to our moment of ecological reckoning and spiritual disconnection\, offering a grounded and hopeful path to reconnection — one that honors Indigenous wisdom without appropriating it. \nDon’t miss this opportunity to hear Kat speak\, ask questions\, and connect with others who share a love for the living world. \nI Sing to the Earth and She Sings Back and Tending the Wild are available at the Big Trees Visitor Center. For more information on these books\, visit   M. Kat Anderson’s website. \n\n\nAbout the Author\nM. Kat Anderson is an ethnobotanist whose thirty-year collaboration with California’s Indigenous elders and traditional knowledge holders has shaped how scientists and land stewards understand the natural world. Author of the landmark Tending the Wild and the newly released I Sing to the Earth\, and She Sings Back (2026)\, her work is a lifelong devotion to restoring our relationship with the land. SUMMARY:Seminar - To The Land Of Promise: The Extraordinary California Gold Rush Journal of Lewis Meyer
DESCRIPTION:August 17\, 2024 \nPresented by: Salvatore John Manna \nWhere: Ralston Classroom Time: 10am-12pm \nOne hundred and seventy-five years after the discovery of gold near Sutter’s Fort\, To The Land Of Promise: The Extraordinary California Gold Rush Journal of Lewis Meyer marks one of the last\, if not the last\, major first-person contributions to the history of the Gold Rush. A gold mine of observations and experiences\, Meyer’s journal of his 1849 voyage from New York\, around Cape Horn\, to San Francisco has never been published\, in part or in whole\, or even been available for research purposes to any historian\, until now. \nTo The Land Of Promise is a rarity. Few other journals published to date are as complete with daily and extensive entries that go far beyond simply commenting on the weather and noting a ship’s longitude and latitude and touch on everything from learned observations of the natural world to perceptive reflections on human nature. Few other first-person accounts published to date include a mining company’s constitution and bylaws. Few other diaries of voyages include a bill of fare detailing daily meals. Only a few others convey the reality of six months living on a sailing ship in the mid-19th century. Faster steamships as well as faster clipper ships soon dominated the Gold Rush trade. The travails of sailing ships rounding the Horn became the stuff of legend. \nCome and here the rest of the story………. \nCBTA Seminars \nSeminars are free and open to the public. There is a $10 day-use fee to enter the park. Bring the family and plan on spending the day among the giant sequoias and plan on enjoying a delicious lunch at Sequoia Snack Shack.

SUMMARY:2023 Giving Tuesday-You Can Make A Difference
DESCRIPTION:We need your help to make sure this valuable program continues at Calaveras Big Trees Stte Park. \nCalaveras Big Trees is one of the 55 state parks participating in the PORTS (Parks Online Resources for Teachers and Students) program for teachers and students all over California and beyond. Heading up this program for Calaveras Big Trees is State Park Interpreter I\, Lillie Oravetz. \nThis program is a free offering for teachers allowing them to schedule a virtual field trip at the state park of their choice.  The teacher connects to the ranger with the provided link\, allowing the ranger into their classroom through the live video. The teacher’s students can be either in the classroom or can attend virtually by using a link provided ahead of time by the teacher. Either way\, the ranger transports the teacher with their students right into the park to show and explain the features of their park to the students with question-and-answer interaction throughout.  The PORTS On-Demand virtual tour is a 45-minute lesson with handouts provided for follow up after the presentation. \nWe need your support to make a difference. \nCalaveras Big Trees PORTS Program Information \nState Park PORTS Program Information \nLillie in Action
